North Queensland and Pacific Biodiesel Pty. Ltd.
was formed 1st July 2007 with founding shareholders Stephen
Welsh, Rollo Sherriff, Ralph Seed, Col & Margie McKenzie. On the
1st November that year the company purchased a small existing
Biodiesel business in Mossman, North Queensland. By September
2008 the company commenced construction of a new factory in the
heavy industrial Cairns suburb of Portsmith. This site was
chosen for many reasons , the main being that Cairns is a major
regional city of North Queensland and allowed for the
distribution of Biodiesel and the collection of used cooking
oils to be streamlined.
With stage one of construction completed the
Mossman plant was relocated with a substantially more
infastructure enabling the company to be better able to service
grow and prosper at its new purpose built factory at 6 Liberty
Street, Portsmith, Cairns Queensland.
Our Operation include but are not limited to:

PNG Biofuels Limited
One of the earlier goals that North Queensland & Pacific
Biodiesel Pty. Ltd. wished to achieve was to look at other
regions and markets that it could
expand into and grow, thus creating diversification of income
stream, a model the company would replicate further down the
track. The first of these, by way of mutual association and
friendship by the company’s General Manager, Stephen Welsh was
with a third generation family based in Papua New Guinea, KarKar
Island which is located some 60 nautical miles due north of
Madang, a provence of Papua New Guinea. Two brothers named Brett
and Derek Middleton, who jointly run and operate a very
successful family business called W M Middleton & Sons Ltd.
trading as Kulili Estates since the retirement of their father,
Sir John Middleton.
Kulili Estates main business activities are the ownership and
operations of coconut and cocoa plantations, involving large
scale copra production, trading, sales of copra and cocoa beans
and virgin oil. One of the company’s main expense was the total
reliance and consumption of petroleum diesel for their small
ships, vehicles, tractors and power generators to run their four
estates on the Island. Due to Stephens friendship with the
family a feasibility study was done to establish if the
production of Biodiesel from Copra was a viable option. The
outcome was successful and resulted with the creation and
signing of a joint venture memorandum of understanding on the
30th April 2008 between North Queensland and Pacific Biodiesel
Pty. Ltd. and W M Middleton & Sons Ltd. t/a Kulili Estates .
Leading to the formation of PNG Biofuels Limited, a PNG
registered and based company of which North Queensland and
Pacific Biodiesel Pty. Ltd. has a 49% holding with the remaining
51% held by W M Middleton & Sons Ltd. The Plant is located on
the northern tip of KarKar Island, on Kulili Estate. By July of
2009 PNG Biofuels Ltd. was in operation employing a number of
local Islanders and is headed by North Queensland and Pacific
Biodiesel’s Chief Fuel Manufacturer, Kevin Bolton. The coconut
flesh is dried (copra) and is then crushed through Oil Expellors
to achieve the coconut oil. The coconut oil is the feedstock
used to manufacture biodiesel for PNG Biofuels Limited, which is
then sold to Kulili Estates for consumption. As of March 2010,
the company is producing 2000L of Coconut Oil / Fuel per day. A
third Expellor has been ordered with the intention of increasing
the production of Coconut Oil / Fuel to 3000L per day.
A major by-product of the manufacturing of Biodiesel from Copra
( Coconut ) is Copra Meal. Copra Meal is sold back on the
mainland as a cattle feed supplement. PNG Biofuels Limited
averages a 57% oil extraction and 35% by weight Copra Meal, the
balance is water and silt. With minimal operational costs ie
labour the company is able to maintain a healthy margin of
profit.
PNG Biofuels Limited is currently looking to expand its current
operations on neighboring Islands.
The Cairns Fatman
On the 6th March 2009, North Queensland and Pacific Biodiesel
Pty Ltd had successfully settled on the 100% purchase of The
Cairns Fatman by way of a mixture of shares and cash. The
Cairns Fatman is integral to North Queensland and Pacific
Biodiesel’s operation as it is the primary supplier for used
cooking oils which is the primary feedstock for the company’s
biodiesel plant. When the opportunity arose to secure the main
feedstock for its production of biodiesel ( used cooking oil )
the company was quick to act. The Cairns Fatman has been in
operation for 32 years operating from its plant at Cook street,
Portsmith, with 2 partners, one being Daniel Portefaix, who
subsequently is now an integral part of the management and also
a substantial shareholder in North Queensland and Pacific
Biodiesel Pty. Ltd., and brings with him his wealth of knowledge
and experience. The principle business operation is as a service
renderer whereby it renderers ( cooks ) fat and bone to produce
tallow and meat meal. The company does daily collection runs
picking up fat and bone from butchers etc which is then
processed through its plant in Cook St. The Tallow is currently
transported in iso-tanker via rail to Brisbane and the Meat Meal
is transported to the Atherton tablelands for distribution and
sale as a stock feed. The other sucessful part of the business
is that in recent years it has established itself as a major
used cooking oil collection service for Cairns and its greater
regional area.
Rocky Creek Rendering Pty. Ltd
In August / September 2009, six months on from the merger with
The Cairns Fatman, Victor Byrnes, Managing Director of
Byrnes Meats and its group of companies approached North
Queensland & Pacific Biodiesel to investigate the synergy
benefits of merging our rendering operation with the Byrnes
groups Rocky Creek Abattoir Pty. Ltd. rendering operation which
is located at Tolga, on the Atherton tablelands North
Queensland.
After an extended period of due diligence an agreement to merge
was signed and executed creating a new company called Rocky
Creek Rendering Pty. Ltd. with North Queensland & Pacific
Biodiesel Pty. Ltd. having a 50% economic interest in. The
merging of The Cairns Fatman rendering operation with that of
Rocky Creek Abattoir’s rendering operation enables both
companies to save substantial amounts of operational costs, and
more importantly the synergy benefits of more than double the
combined turnover. The newly formed company, Rocky Creek
Rendering Pty. Ltd. has a vision to expand its rendering
operation by way of obtaining other feedstocks from southern and
central regional areas in the future.
Other Initiatives - Solar Power
In December 2009, North Queensland & Pacific Biodiesel Pty. Ltd.
signed a installation and marketing contract with Infinity Solar
for the purchase and installation of a combined 120kw Solar
Powered Photovoltaic (PV) Electricity Generating Systems, at its
site of 6 Liberty Street, Portsmith, Cairns Queensland. This
initiative will not only provide all green power for use on the
site but also generate an excess of over 85% to be exported back
to the grid. As at the time of signing the contracts the
principals of Infinity Solar had mentioned that the proposed
combined 4 X 29.64kw systems would be the largest private
commercial rooftop mount in Queensland, with North Queensland
and Pacific Biodiesel pioneering green energy and making the
company carbon neutral in
its footprint.
